What is the project about?
Hannover is a city in transition, shaped by diversity, history, and a strong European identity. As the capital of Lower Saxony, it represents a blend of regional identities and transnational influences.
During a five-day residency, you are invited to explore Hannover as part of a complex, interconnected European urban space and document your personal impressions through photography. You will determine your own artistic approach or research question (e.g., diversity, democracy, coexistence, etc.).
Your photographs, taken during your residency, will be exhibited alongside works by Hanover-based photo artist Guido Klumpe. He will spend five days photographing in Copenhagen, documenting his impressions of the city. The opening is scheduled for August 26, 2025, and we would be delighted to welcome you there. The exhibition is also planned to travel to additional locations in Germany and Denmark.
The exhibition opening will be part of the event series “Guests Among Friends”, in which the Hannover region, the City of Hannover, and the European Information Center (EIZ) Niedersachsen celebrate the rotating EU Council Presidencies.
Your work will be exhibited alongside photographs by Guido Klumpe, a photographic artist who will spend five days in Copenhagen during the project period to document his impressions of the city.
Representatives of the Danish Embassy, the State of Lower Saxony, the Hannover region, and the City of Hannover will be invited to the opening event.
Who is behind the project?
The project is organized by the European Information Center (EIZ) Niedersachsen, which is part of the Lower Saxony state government. The EIZ is also part of the EUROPE DIRECT network, which provides information about EU institutions, policies, and initiatives. It offers publications, educational materials, expert contacts, and organizes lectures, discussions, and events.
Who can apply?
Professional photographic artists and photographers living in Denmark who work in the fields of street photography, photojournalism, and urban photography. Submitted images must be primarily created from traditional photography, whether digital or analog. If artificial intelligence is used in the creative process, it must be limited to the editing or enhancement of images originally captured with a camera (just removing noise or adjusting sharpness using AI-based tools). Images generated entirely by artificial intelligence will not be accepted.
We are particularly interested in diverse perspectives, including those from marginalized communities. However, the artistic work does not need to focus on marginalization itself. The key selection criterion is the quality of the artistic work.
